Cancer Champions
Cancer remains a major challenge for our community — our area has one of the highest cancer mortality rates in the country and one of the lowest levels of cancer screening uptake.
Early detection saves lives. When cancer is found at an early stage, treatment is often more effective and survival rates improve dramatically. By increasing participation in NHS cancer screening programmes, we can detect cancer sooner, provide timely treatment, and significantly reduce deaths caused by the disease. Cancer affects more than just the person diagnosed — it touches families, friends, and the wider community. That’s why early diagnosis and awareness are so important.
At GYUP, we’re dedicated to raising awareness of cancer screening. We are training Cancer Champions — local people who share information, offer practical support, and help start conversations about cancer and screening in their communities. Working in partnership with healthcare professionals and community organisations, we aim to spread knowledge, build confidence, and encourage more people to take up screening. Cancer Champions are key to this effort.
